Armenians living on their ancestral land for millennia faced the most horrible persecution the turn of the 20th century. The Imperial Academy’s expedition of 1916 to Van, Mush and Bitlis sanctioned by Tsar Nicholas II immortalised the traditions of ordinary Armenians on the edge of extinction. The photos and artifacts collected by renowned ethnographer Alexander Miller and his team of experts are a testament to a rich heritage.
Thanks to the partnership between AJF and the Saint Petersburg’s Museum of Ethnography, one of the largest in the world, as well as with support from the Government of Armenia and other partners, the Treasures of Western Armenia catalogue and exhibit will also tour other locations, including Armenia.
AJF is committed to exploring and advancing the heritage of Armenians in the arts and crafts. On the centennial commemorative anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, AJF dedicates this book to the survival, resilience and prosperity of the Armenian nation.
